Pohutukawa are known as New Zealand's Christmas tree due to the spectacular red blossoms they produce in early summer. While Pohutukawa are naturally found in coastal areas, they can grow in the inland North Island, provided they have well-drained soil and are protected from frosts, particularly while young. Pohutukawa nectar is favoured by bellbirds, tui, and some species of native gecko.
